Access to main circuit terminals of a gas-insulated substation (GIS) requires several actions to be taken before conducting the measurements with conventional timing measurements.
One of them implies disconnecting ground connection from one side of the breaker to eliminate parallel circuit through the enclosure and grounding path, whose presence is an obstacle to the application of the conventional method.
The above reduces the safety of the test procedure. Moreover, it makes the maintenance procedure much more complicated and time consuming when compared to other substation types.
As a consequence of the mentioned shortcomings created increasing demand for noninvasive test methods for evaluating the condition of GIS circuit breaker.
DV Power developed the novel method for testing high voltage (HV) circuit breakers in the GIS substations.
It is based on the high DC current injection through the parallel connection of the main circuit and grounding path and the simultaneous measurement of the current signal response on the secondary of the current transformers (CT) or primary circuit terminals during circuit breaker operation.
